2021-2022 Hub Virtual School Letter

Dear Hub Families:

As we look forward to our second year of operations, we want to thank you all for the support that our staff and students have received at The Hub. This support from our families, MHSD and the School Board has allowed us to become a permanent option for all of our families. We are excited to be able to add to our programming, as well as to open registration to any students in Alberta from kindergarten to grade 9.

In our first year, we developed a community culture with a focus on learning, participation and innovative virtual instruction; allowing us to learn about the unique needs of our students and families. When students and families actively participate in a virtual school community, they can see great success through collaborative learning. Students flourished because they showed up and actively participated in their scheduled classes, Google meets and tutorial sessions. The benefits of setting up daily routines, regular schedules and consistent workspaces were quickly realized.

Instruction is live and interactive; teachers and students meet multiple times throughout each school day. Our experience in the first year showed that when students attend and participate, we can identify their unique learning needs and serve them better. Even though regular attendance can sometimes be difficult for families, we encourage all of our students to engage with their classmates and meet with their teachers.

Going into 2021-2022, we are excited to grow our programming, adding complementary courses and options for our Junior High students, such as technology studies, leadership studies, based on student interest and teacher expertise. We are able to partner with bricks and mortar schools so local students are able to participate in school athletics.

As we reflect on the journey we have taken, collectively we can take a great deal of satisfaction and pride in all that we have all accomplished as a school community. Care and compassion are the focal point of our work, creating a culture of safety, growth and learning, empowering us all to continue to improve our practice for the learning of all of our students.

As COVID-19 continues to impact our lives, and the stressors in our community change, our work may be challenged and we will respond with responsive transformation. We look forward to the 2021-2022 school year where we will continue to work together to meet the needs of our staff, students and families.
